Shooting The Gallery

Most of us have stuff in frames on walls. Invariably, the subject matter has a thread running thought it - what you like, and what is personal to you. Most of our parents, by example, taught us to maroon one picture per wall, or the suburban alternative, one picture slightly diagonal to its pair. Job done, the wall was taken care of. If you revamp houses, as I do, you'd be surprised at how many people stick safely to this, in terror of what may happen if they stray from the prescribed rules of display. Sometimes I come across timid little islands of family photos, growing across a wall like wild mushrooms in circular formations but mostly, photos clutter every surface with little thought to making a display of them, reminding me of little old ladies who must have a small, insignificant pot plant on every flat surface they own.
After all, why frame something if not to display it? And if you do display them, make them a feature, not an accident. Group them together! With some dynamic master classes in grouping, here are our gallery wall stars. Collections of things are great - at Calke Abbey in the 18thc the practice of pinning caricatures (the newspaper cartoons of the day) to the wall grew into a habit and now the National Trust preserves them in place.
Chateau Castelnau in France has a defined collection on incredible antiqued blue flock wallpaper, gently picking up the faded blue of the Damask couch.
The collection of 19th c portraits are what make this room stunning.

All Jesus, all the time. The Jesus Wall Studios in Los Angeles:
Summer color theme at a'court place
Such flair in this arrangement of graduating sizes. You have to adore a touch of OCD to love this one. I confess that I do.
Ravenscourt Red...
...and Strawberry Vale Blue show that sometimes all you need is a color to make it work.
Or a general thread...this one is nature.
However, sometimes the wall itself can be the backdrop statement, as here at Noah's Place:
And these days, if you don't have a raft of interesting art to configure, get the wallpaper to do it for you - Pip Studios Memento wallpaper!
